Global aircraft manufacturers plan to develop hybrid system and fully electric system by 2020 and 2050 respectively.

The size of an electric motor and battery system is getting smaller and lighter and there has been an international effort towards developing a hybrid system that requires only half of the current fuel consumption. New commercial UAVs, airport lighting lanes and solar aircrafts are opening up new potential markets for the battery manufacturers.

An electric aircraft produces minimal noise and vibration. It has also lighter and simpler design compared to an internal combustion engine and allows convenient access for maintenance. An electric glider, for example, is a commercialized two-seater aircraft equipped with 5-10kWh battery for propulsion power.

A solar powered airplane also installs a secondary battery so that during daytime it stores energy from attached panels then discharges the stored energy during night time. This design allowed the first “zero-carbon” non-stop flight in 2007.
